Registration, Cancellation Policy and Fees

 

On-line registration will be available at 8:00am MST on September 12, 2009.  Click here to register (link will go active by September 12).

 

The cost is $80 / team. You must be a member of a Canadian orienteering club to participate (for insurance purposes).  Non-members can purchase a membership with FWOC for $10 (available when you register if required).  This event uses electronic timing.  Electronic timing sticks (Sport Ident) are available if you do not have your own.  Only one timing stick per team is required.

 

All entrants will receive some sweet swag and an opportunity to win some great prizes.

 

No refunds.  Transfers or partner substitutions will be allowed up until race day.

 

Location

 

Race will be stationed out of the Sandy McNabb Recreation Area.  Parking details and exact location of the staging area will be published closer to the event date.

 

Mandatory Gear

 

Gear will be inspected prior to race start.  If you do not have the mandatory gear, your team will forfeit the right to compete.

  • 2 Compasses

  • 2 Whistles

  • 1 Emergency Blanket

  • Capacity to carry 2L of water each

  • Food for course - minimum 400 calories each  

  • 1 Waterproof and windproof jacket per racer

  • 1 Toque per racer

Suggested items include a small first aid kit, additional food,, electrolyte, extra clothing, gloves, cell phone, map bag, pen

 

Scoring/Award Categories

 

Team of 2 (male, female or co-ed) will race against the clock to earn the most points by finding orienteering controls and completing navigational challenges. Prizes will be awarded for the top male, female and co-ed team.  In the event of a tie in points, the team's performance on the trail orienteering segment will determine the winner and if necessary the time to complete the timed sections of this race will be used (team with shorter time will win).  In addition, all teams will have a chance to win prizes for their performance in specific segments of the race.  

 

Accommodations & Food

Camping

There is a campground at Sandy McNabb. You can't make reservations there - it's first come first serve. 

Motels

Lots of accommodation options are available in Calgary. You may also want to consider staying in Black Diamond or Turner Valley which are the closest towns to Sandy McNabb Recreation Area. (It's about 20km from Turner Valley to Sandy McNabb). Okotoks and High River are also options.

If you stay in Calgary, south Calgary would be your best bet to minimize driving time to/from Sandy McNabb. Here is a small sample of hotels that are in the south end of Calgary:

Food at event sites

You will need to bring your own food & drinks including water - there are no food services at the event sites.
